BILLY BOB BUTTONS

admin on: Academy Blog

Recently, an author came to visit year 7. Billy Bob Buttons (aka Edward Trayer) told us the first thing he thinks of when starting to write a book. Let’s get the obvious choices out first: plot, problem, characters?

Those answers are WRONG J Good try nonetheless. The first thing he thinks of is (drum roll please) the audience. Before he writes a book, he decides if it he is writing for boys, girls, both. When he thinks of that he decides if it is a funny, scary, adventurous or romance story (hint: it’s not romance). After that he told us about his three editors the one who are all about grammar, punctuation and spelling, the lawyer and one that helps with illustrations and title page.

After that. He asked us a question, how long did harry potter take to be published? 5 days, 5 weeks or 5 years? it was five years since J.K Rowling had to think of all the names for things and people even very small characters!

                          RANDOM AUTHOR FACT

  • J.K Rowling filled five notebook pages with made up "Q" words before she came up with "Quidditch.”

Towards the end, he had a Q&A with us and here are some of the questions:

Q: What is your favourite book?

A: it might be Tiffany Sparrow Spook slayer by me, but I also like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Q: What got you into writing?

A: well I was going into my sister’s room to cause some mischief. I was looking her diary but she had hidden it so I looked under her bed to find a box. When I opened it there was a box of books so I decided to read them. After reading thought I could do better and re-wrote them.

Q: what were your jobs before an author?

A: Well I was an English teacher in a secondary school but I was also a pilot.
